Miller’s unapologetic pandering to Anglophilia and her fawning compliments to British mannerisms and physiognomy that embroider the whole verse story must have been music to many pro-British Americans, although they certainly drove distraught a sizable segment of the public, the Irish Americans and other Anglophobes, who objected to America’s global leadership precisely because they saw it as a pretext for aid to perﬁdious Albion. Prewar writers also fanned the fear of airborne invasions in order to neutralize the remoteness of violence.
Their meanings changed because they were dependent on the context, which was in turn determined as much by accidents of geography as by the weight of history. Was America responsible for the survival of democracy in general? How about the survival of democracy in China? Or democracy in Europe, in Africa, or in Latin America? If democracy were to be defended under the aspect of eternity, these geographical qualiﬁcations must not inﬂuence how to answer these questions. But national debates during the prewar years gave color to the cliché that normative questions of this sort, when posed in relation to an actual region and to America’s capabilities that were constrained by geographical and technological limitations, could be answered only by taking into account location, distance, and other accidentals, such as race and culture, that went with them.
The play follows a conversion plot of sorts, which centers on Charleston, a veteran of the International Brigade in Spain and now a lighthouse guard. He has sequestered himself from From Depression to War 41 world events, nursing his idealism that has been mortally wounded by Franco’s victory in Spain. Even so, world politics manages to stalk him to his sanctuary through the radio set he brings with him.
